(Toronto, June 16, 2008) In an unprecedented effort to promote environmental sustainability, the entire Global News organization is launching “Global News Goes Green” on Friday, June 20th. In addition to covering the day“s major news stories, all Global News stations across the country are dedicating their broadcasts on this day to key environmental issues and eco-friendly topics, providing Canadians with ways to reduce their carbon footprints.

“Environmental awareness is at its peak, and our ‘Global News Goes Green” initiative is to provide Canadians with the inspiration and knowledge to protect the planet’s delicate balance,” said Troy Reeb, Global Television“s Vice-President of News. “The environment is an issue that concerns us all, and as the country’s news leader, we are committed to delivering news and solutions that can make a positive impact on our world.”

For “Global News Goes Green”, all Global newscasts coast-to-coast will focus on a wide variety of topics surrounding sustainable development throughout their broadcasts including the Morning News, Noon News, Early News, News Hour, Evening News, Prime News, News Hour Final and News Final in the respective markets. The newscasts will deliver in-depth stories of ways to help protect and conserve our planet, live expert interviews and success stories of local heroes making a difference.

Below are some major stories from Global News:

Global National
From the front lines of climate change, Global National concludes a three-day special report from the Canadian Arctic on the 20th, examining one of the most timely and controversial issues of today. Global National investigates how changes to the environment have impacted the traditional way of life for people of the north, their communities, the rest of Canada and the world.

Global News Ontario
Global News Ontario offers in-depth coverage of local sustainability issues ranging from the state of Toronto“s waterways for a growing population, to what the next generation is doing to make the world more “green.” Plus, the News Hour goes live, on-location at a local Greater Toronto public school where students, teachers and parents are making inroads in helping improve the environment.

Global BC
Global BC’s Morning News team broadcasts live from the shores of Vancouver to examine how the city is keeping its beaches and shorelines clean. Comprehensive coverage continues with stories ranging from unique British Columbian inventions, to the extremes local residents will go to live an eco-friendly life.

Global News Calgary
Global News Calgary brings a two-part series on food waste reduction and effective ways to save money and help the planet. The News Hour team broadcasts live, on-location at a local landfill to investigate recycling solutions and ways to reduce the amount of waste.

Global News Edmonton
In addition to providing viewers with helpful environmental tips from its news anchors, Global News Edmonton focuses on local stories including Edmontonians using “green” household appliances, an in-depth look at whether eco-friendly cleaners are really what they claim to be, and a behind-the-scenes tour of the Global newsroom with energy-saving advice from an environment expert.

Global News Winnipeg
The Evening News takes to the open road, broadcasting live, on-location at a clean energy producing wind farm in St. Leon, Manitoba. Here, the news focuses on how members of a small, but modern community live simpler lives to reduce their carbon footprint.

Global News Regina
Global News Regina examines what the city is doing to meet its goal of decreasing the level of greenhouse gas emissions and unique ways local businesses and websites are reducing their impact on the environment.

Global News Quebec
As part of its unique “My Planet” series, Global News Quebec takes its Evening News broadcast on the road to a local Montreal school where students are producing a news report on their eco-friendly initiatives.

“Global News Goes Green” is sponsored by Toyota Canada, a champion for the environment. As part of this “green” initiative, Global News and Toyota Canada Inc., along with the National Post and Canada.com introduced a “Make Things Better Challenge” contest to encourage Canadians to share what they are doing for the betterment of the environment. One lucky Canadian will be selected to win a Toyota Prius. Toyota has a long-standing commitment to environmental stewardship, both globally and in Canada. Toyota’s environmental commitment extends beyond cars to encompass every aspect of the company.
